Scottish Wool Waulking

Abstract

Scottish traditional music goes well beyond the bellow of a set of bagpipes. There are traditional working songs sung by women, poetry and stories set to music by bards, and raucous songs sung by men while drinking. My research focuses on the women who sang as a way to coordinate the waulking of the wool, a method of setting dye and softening the cloth, into a routine that allowed them to bond and complete a tedious task in a more pleasant manner.
